| History: | The name is from the Washoe language and translates as “saddle between points,” describing the overall shape of the area around the summit. The name was changed by a decision of the BGN on July 9, 2020. The former name, Jeff Davis Peak, was first recorded on the USGS map of 1889, although according to California Place Names (Erwin Gudde, 1998), “[it] may have been in use locally [before then], as many of the inhabitants of nearby Summit City (now abandoned) were Confederate sympathizers during the Civil War.” |
